Coventry University

Overview

We offer English Language courses throughout the academic year. Our roots can be traced as far back as 1843 to the Coventry College of Design. Much has changed since then, and we have made great strides in our development as an institution - particularly over the last ten years. We are an established academic presence regionally, nationally and internationally, and take great care in providing a supportive environment for all our students.

Our research strengths have secured us three prestigious Centres of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) covering areas of design, maths support and health and social care. We have a world class reputation for automotive design and continue to carve out specialisms that have a wider social, environmental and political impact.

Location

As a City, Coventry provides excellent value for money, is centrally located, and has superb links to the rest of the UK. You can reach London in just over an hour or Birmingham International Airport within 20 minutes by train.

The City of Coventry is better than it has ever been. You’ll find popular high street shops, boutiques, bars, clubs and restaurants. Many are in the historic Cathedral Quarter, which is located right next to the University.

The SkyDome, a huge entertainment and leisure complex featuring a multi screen-cinema, ice rink, three night-clubs and several bars, has recently been built. Other new developments include the Ricoh Arena, a new stadium with 32,000 seats, which is home to Coventry City Football Club and also hosts concerts and other events.

Coventry is close to some of the most historic, cultural and scenic areas of the UK. For a relaxing escape close by, you’ll find Shakespeare’s Stratford-Upon-Avon, Royal Leamington Spa and the castles of Kenilworth and Warwick.

Restaurants, Cafe bars and informal Cafeterias provide a wide range of foods and services for students and staff, all located within easy walking distance. Meals and snacks available include pastas, curries, fresh bakery produce, burgers and pizzas, among others.

The new £20 million library stocks nearly 350,000 books and 2,600 current periodicals. There are over 1,150 study spaces, CD-Rom, multimedia and internet resources.

Computer services can be accessed at most times, including evenings and weekends. In addition to a range of word processing packages, students can also use graphics software. Tutorials are available for those not familiar with computers and a team of advisers are available twelve hours a day to deal with queries.

Boasting a brand new £4 million state-of-the-art Sports and Recreation Centre, Coventry University is well-equipped to cater for everyone's taste in recreation.

Support for international students

We recognise that international students have particular needs to meet the challenge of studying in a foreign country, which can be a daunting prospect.

We provide international students with a warm welcome, support throughout their stay in all personal and academic matters and, above all, give them a memorable, value-for-money experience.

The International Office is here to give you help and support before you arrive and throughout the duration of your study, to help you make your stay with us as happy as possible. We have experienced welfare advisers to whom you can turn for advice on a range of issues:-

Immigration
Tuition fees
Health
Housing
Employment
Work permits
Financial, religious, guidance and other personal matters

We organise a special orientation programme for all international students. The social programme will help you find your way around the city and perhaps to meet other students socially. The University Chaplaincy Centre is also there to support students of all faith and traditions.

The Students' Union Advice Centre (SUAC) offers a free, independent and confidential service to all students, covering all welfare and education issues. Advisers are experienced in the complexities of student housing rights, consumer problems, legal matters, disciplinary issues and any other grievances students may have. It also offers facilities such as clubs, societies, bars, eateries and entertainment.

The International Office assists with all enquiries and applications from international students who wish to study at the University.
