Bath Spa University

Overview

Bath Spa University can trace its origins back to 1898. It is a medium-sized institution with around 5,500 students and offers pre-degree study, undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees in art and design, performing arts, education, humanities, business and management and many other subjects. It is linked with more than 50 institutions in Europe, North Asia, South-East Asia, the USA and Africa.

Academic strengths

Under the Higher Education Funding Council for England’s (HEFCE) inspection system, both English and Environmental Studies at the University were judged to be Excellent. Sociology, Environmental Biology, Art and Design, Psychology, Business Studies, the Study of Religions, and Education have been assessed under the new points scheme by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) and have been awarded an excellent average of 22 out of a maximum of 24 points. An institutional review confirmed the Excellent status of this institution.

Location

Bath is England’s only World Heritage City and is famous for its important place in England's history, starting in Roman times. Today, Bath has the only hot springs in the UK, and is defined as a place of culture, healing and pleasure.

Bath boasts an attractive riverside, Roman Baths and Georgian architecture. Other historic architecture includes The Royal Crescent, the Circus, the Abbey, the Pump Room and the Assembly Rooms. Bath is renowned for the range and quality of its restaurants, cafes and tea shops.

It only takes about 90 minutes by train to get from London to Bath. Bath, although a small city, has a metropolitan atmosphere with great shopping as well as excellent galleries and museums.

Bath is surrounded by countryside in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’ and it has easy access to walking and cycling trails. Within an hour’s drive from Bath are a range of other attractions such as Cheddar Caves, Wookey Hole, Longleat, Stonehenge and Glastonbury Abbey.

Accommodation

Campus accommodation is self-catering. Cookers, microwaves and fridge/freezers are provided in kitchens. All rooms have been recently updated. Many rooms have lovely views. Art and design students at the Sion Hill campus live in an historical converted Georgian terrace, Somerset Place, near the city centre.

Both Sion Hill and Newton Park campuses have 24-hour security. There are launderettes, shops, bars and refectories at both sites. A third site is off campus (Waterside Court) but centrally located.

Kitchens and in some cases, bathrooms, are shared. Generally around 6 to 8 students share a kitchen and 5 to 6 students share a bathroom/shower. There are some rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

006/07 prices ranged from £55-£90 per week for a single room, £55-£64 for a shared double-room. International students can choose homestay accomodation with a local family. This costs £108 per week inclusive of all meals except weekday lunches.

Facilities

Newton Park campus (all courses and subjects except art and design and general English) is a spectacular parkland estate, leased from Prince Charles. The grounds were designed by the landscape gardener Capability Brown in the 18th century. Work is currently underway to restore the grounds to their original design. The campus has its own lake, nature reserve, woods and farmland, along with historic buildings. Frequent buses shuttle between the campus and Bath centre, which takes about 20 minutes one way.

There is a modern library (also housing the Careers Office), lecture theatres, laboratories and seminar rooms. In the Students’ Union building is the SU office, a large bar and common room, a bookshop and stationery shop. The SU shop sells a wide range of groceries - it was voted "best shop in an institution" in 2003 in a nationwide vote - and the refectory provides everything from cooked meals to snacks. For entertainment, students can make use of the on-site social and sports facilities. The Michael Tippett Centre hosts performances and exhibitions. It is the only purpose-built concert hall in Bath and is used both as a teaching resource and as a major venue for the arts. A second new Performing Arts Centre will be opened in October 2006. Our Creative Music Technology Department hosts Europe’s first Digidesign Certified Training Location, and has two fully-equipped digital recording studios, running Pro Tools and Logic Audio Platinum on Apple Mac G4s plus three additional Apple Mac G4 Pro Tools/Logic Audio labs, each supporting sampling, synthesis and hard disk recording.

Sion Hill campus is home to art and design studies and our English Language School (ELS). It is located in Lansdown on the north side of Bath. The ELS offers all-year round EFL courses and summer schools in English language. Sion Hill has a mixture of modern buildings, with Georgian Crescents, which Bath is well known for. The campus is surrounded by gardens and originally belonged to a 19th century mansion house. Although the house was destroyed in the war, the ornamental grounds remain. Facilities include a library, student accommodation in a Georgian terrace, a stationery shop, Students’ Union offices, a bar and refectory. In addition, there is a slide library with some 40,000 slides. Working areas include graphic design studios, electronic media workshops, studios for art, textiles and sculpture, workshops for wood, etching, lithography and silkscreen, and photography darkrooms.

Support for international students

Being a student at Bath Spa University gives you the chance to be a "big fish in a small pond" - which means that through its small size the institution provides a non-threatening and very supportive and safe atmosphere for international students. You are not just a number here - the friendly environment lets you develop your personal as well as your academic potential. The International Office assists international students with all aspects of their application process, arrival information, accommodation and general welfare. The International Student Advisor organises social events and trips and will be able to advise on a variety of international issues such as immigration, opening bank accounts and working in the UK.

A Welfare Officer is responsible for counselling and advising students who seek help on any matters relating to their social or emotional well-being on a short-term basis, and for referring students who need long-term assistance. The Welfare Officer is also responsible for the administration of various sources of financial help available to students.

The doctors from a local practice provide medical services for all students who register with the Medical Service. Surgeries are held at Newton Park on Wednesday mornings and Friday afternoons, Sion Hill on Monday afternoons only and Fairfield Park (practice location) from Monday to Saturday.

The Students' Union at Bath Spa University is run by students for students. It is there to look after students’ needs while studying and living at the University. As with most Students' Unions around the country, the SU offers plenty of clubs and societies including hockey, men’s and women’s rugby men’s and women’s football, the Christian Union, magazine, kung fu, judo, human rights, swimming, African drumming and beat poetry. There is an Asian Home Society for students from Asian countries.

There is an SU bar at each site. Both bars are used as entertainment venues in the evenings for the various events that the Union puts on. Past performers have included Jools Holland, Hot Chocolate, Shed Seven and Shanks ‘n’ Bigfoot. Other acts have included Hugh Lennon and his Hypno Dog, the Fluffy Brothers and the Valentine Flyguy. For larger events, such as the Summer Ball, marquee parties and the Freshers Party, marquees are hired in the University grounds.
